adam breakey hinshaw, ph.d.
I am a licensed psychologist in private practice providing short-term and long-term psychotherapy to adults. I specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy (sometimes also called psychoanalytic psychotherapy), an evidence-based form of psychotherapy shown by research to be as effective or more effective than other forms of therapy and to have long-lasting effects.
As a psychodynamic psychologist, I am trained to work with the whole person, not just symptoms, and I view my relationship with the people I work with as important to their progress. People who have found me most helpful are looking for an individualized therapy experience that is both personally felt and tailored to their specific needs and goals as they view them.
I am experienced working with people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, with concerns ranging from mild to severe. Some areas of specific experience and interest are anxiety, depression and mood concerns, eating and body image concerns, uncommon experiences and thinking patterns (e.g., psychosis, hallucinations, long-standing feelings of being profoundly different than others), creativity struggles, chronic personality and/or relationship problems, and recovery from trauma, abuse, and oppression. In terms of specific populations, people who have had unsuccessful prior therapies (e.g., have been labeled or feel they have been labeled as “difficult,” have not experienced benefits from therapy, etc.) tend to find me helpful, and I frequently work with people identifying as lesbian, gay, and bisexual.
